...though it doesn't seem to take pesticides, etc into account...seems to be focusing specifically on nutritional content. |
I don't think anyone has ever tried to say organic food has more nutrients etc.
It is the pesticide and chemical content that the organic label is supposed to protect the consumer from. |
Exactly. All things being equal, I'd still rather eat the food without the pesticides than the food with it. If you want more nutritious food, you have to go with not only organic but 'bio-dynamic' foods. |
Aren't most organic foods grown in soil fertilized with manure - no wonder there are frequent outbreaks of food poisoning associated with organic crap (no pun intended). |
Sorry, the outbreaks are not usually from organic farms. Check your facts. Non-organic food also uses manure.... |
Also heard that it was talking about nutricional value and not pestisides. I am most concerned about pestisides myself although genetically altered stuff also bothers me. As for me-there is no way I want to serve meat that is loaded up with hormones- a friend of mine had a doctor tell her that a lot of girls are hitting puberty earlier as a result of the added hormones which obviously can affect their fertility later on. |
Early puberty could also be a result of obesity. |
It's so not about the nutrition. It's about the monolithic food industry that pumps fake additives into its food, covers fields in pesticides, farms one crop ad infinitum. I personally buy local from the farmer's market even if its not certified organic over organic from NZ or someplace because it's probably more environmentally sensitive (the ... Read Moretransportation and packaging costs soar for that organic apple from NZ.) I also try to buy Organic Valley products because they source to individual farm producers and aren't part of the agribusiness complex that is leading us to ruin (my soapbox) - Dude - just go see Food, Inc. or read Animal, Vegetable, Mineral - you'll start to understand why people are so concerned about our food supply. It's so much more complicated than organic vs. non-organic and the nutritional benefits of either. Moreover - it is more likely that organic shelf products - think ketchup, have less of the crappy stuff like high fructose corn syrup and synthetic dyes and food coloring. |
It can also not be healthier if people assume that "organic" means they don't need to still take care in food preparation. There are plenty of "organic" fertilizers and pesticides. Wash your food, organic or not. |
That said, I WILL NOT eat trans fat, and prefer free range eggs for the O-3. Also, I will not eat farm raised fish. |
Why is farm raised fish bad? |
Many farm-raised fish have high pesticide levels due to the feed that the farmers use. |
Is it because the fish from the sea are healthier because they eat the kelp deep in the sea? If that's the case, instead of eating sea caught fish, why not just harvest the kelp and have that instead? |
You mean, wash our organic or conventional food in municipal water coming out of our taps? OK. You may know the source of your food, but do you know the source of your water supply? |
