Recruiters work for companies, right? Is there anyone who works for the job seeker?

I've been out of the full-time work force for about 10 years. I've been a p/t bookeeper for a family business, but they closing shop and moving away. I've been looking for the past 9-12 months and never get past the phone interview. Initially, I just wanted p/t, but I'm up for anything now. I don't have a lot of friends that are in fields that I think can help. I've basically been a SAHM and my education isn't in accounting. I'm at my wits end and feeling really deflated that every opportunity leads to rejection. I'd be willing to pay someone if they can help me find a match somewhere.

What is your education in?

My degree is in the physical sciences, but I left that behind a long time ago. I'm looking for something in admin, project management, office management, etc........

Please don't pay someone to help you find a job.

Honestly, I would talk to a temp agency. They have tons of admin type openings and will help you get your computer skills up to date. They will probably have you working within a week.

Whether temp or permanent placement, there are tons of professional staffing agencies in DC. You don't pay them a dime, the company recruiting the staffer does. Google "professional staffing DC."

Check Craigslist DC, there are direct hire jobs.

Recruiters work for companies to an extent.

Recruiters work for themselves is more the reality. I have worked on a lot of projects that involved using recruiters to hire positions for us. The downside to using recruiters is that they are only interested in filling the spots they are contracted to fill in the time frame they are given. That means, they do not always provide the best recruits, they simply provide the bodies necessary to fill the positions in order to meet the demands of the contract.

That being said, recruiters will work with you to help you find a job because it is also in their best interest to use you to fill one of their positions.

Go to a temp agency. You can tell them the type of work you are looking for and they will try to match you up as best as possible.

To add, here are some decent temp agencies:

AppleOne
Corporate Brokers
Adecco
Robert Half
Manpower

not OP but why not? I have plenty of money to pay but I hate job search tweaking cover letters and resumes etc. I would love to meet a professional who would interview me, get a sense of my skills experience etc and then send my resumes or whatever find jobs for me. Does this service exist?

No this service does not exist because we are not a banana republic and it is not an American custom to pay someone to give you a job. Recruiters are paid by companies to find people your bad hr departments. You need you go to a temp firm that also does recruiting for permanent positions and let them groom you for the jobs they have. They will help with interview skills and resumes.
