Thinking about moving, so kids can go to Yorktown for HS instead of Wakefield -- pros? cons?

Anonymous
We are thinking about moving, to change neighborhood school from Wakefield to Yorktown for HS -- for anyone else that has done this, did you think it was worth it? Is the education noticeably better (even though it's all APS)? Any pros/cons to consider?

Did it for elementary (Wakefield pyramid to Yorktown pyramid). Well worth it.

I think it depends on your kids. I thrived in an environment where I had lots of successes because my peers were just kind of meh academically. I think I might've shut down and not tried much if it was a more cut-throat environment.

My dd is similar.

Op, is your kid currently at Wakefield?

We're in a 'hood zoned for Yorktown, though my daughter isn't there yet. I can tell you that of the families we know with kids there, they are all happy with the education their kids are getting. That said, because we go to ATS, we also know kids who go to Wakefield and W-L and they are doing fine too. (W-L is very large, but it's a wonderful community.)

I think if your kids are smart and motivated, they will likely be fine anywhere you send them. I hope you get some good answers here.

My co worker is a Wakefield grad. Wonderful person. They have had only good things to say about Wakefield.

OP here -- we are not yet in HS, and would like to move before HS starts. For the past year or two, have been unhappy with the progress my child is making at current school, and wondering if it's going to be the same at Wakefield.

But, have heard the Yorktown pyramid is better. Although, I don't know specifically how it is better or how these school compare, we are considering whether it would make sense to move. (There are a lot of variables; it's tough to know. Part of the problem is, I'm not sure how much is the school vs the kid. )

What school are you currently at? Is your child doing any advanced course work? What math are they in?

We're in S. Arlington, but my kids are still in elementary school. Our neighborhood sends kids to lots of different elementary schools, which probably indicates that the neighborhood families have some concerns about the local elementary school. Those families, however, all seem to send their kids to TJ for middle school and Wakefield for high school. The kids I know who are already at Wakefield really love it, and their parents are extremely happy with the school. The principal is particularly highly regarded.

Statistically, there isn't a huge difference in performance for similarly situated students between the two schools, so your child will probably do roughly the same at Yorktown as he/she would do at Wakefield -- the overall differences in school performance are due primarily to differences in socioeconomic status of the student populations. We're in Yorktown and don't plan to move, but I do have some reservations about the white upon white and privilege upon privilege nature of the school.

Also, didn't they just screw the pouch on the student growth projections? Isn't Yorktown going to be way over crowded?

This is my take away from my south Arlington neighborhood.

Without getting into Wakefield vs. Yorktown or other options, Arlington will currently let you do this for free. If you are about to be at the high school years, you can just apply to transfer and have your DC transported to Yorktown.

https://www.apsva.us/school-options/high-school-choices/ - and check the waiver, neither Wakefield nor Yorktown is close to 120%. No guarantees about five years from now.

That sounds like an awesome option, your child can spend an excessive amount of time traveling to and from school every day, and then be no where near his friends during non-school hours.

Hey retard. Arlington is 26 square miles. No one is commuting all day anywhere.
