Residency Fraud

Anonymous
Today I received three letters from my school D.C. One was addressed to the parent of my son and the other two were for two other kids with different last names. We are in bounds for Maury. We are super high on the prek3 waitlist. So in my bitterness I opened the mail for the other kids. Low and behold they are using our address for in bounds preference at Maury! I know I shouldn't have opened the mail, but what do I do now!

Call the OSSE residency fraud hotline and they will tell you how to get the letters to them.

Here's the contact info https://osse.dc.gov/service/investigation-and-residency-fraud

I would also take a copy to the principal and school registrar. Make sure the school knows they do not reside at your address.

could be a nw ne mistake.

Call MSDC. It could be residency fraud, or it could be a screwup in their system that duplicated your address somehow. The latter actually seems more likely given that it was two different unrelated kids, but either way, they'll want to know about and fix it.

(And I would go with "I mistakenly opened these letters assuming they were about my child since no other children live here" and skip the bitterness part...

Did they get a sibling preference? I wonder if they have older siblings at Maury who also used your address. Is the last name distinctive enough you can check the directory.

We don't need to go all Nancy Drew here. Just get the information to the people who are supposed to investigate it.

Make copies of those letters, OP, and take them to the principal, OSSE and the media if you do not get a satisfactory answer.

Just take it to the school. It's a small school and they can figure it out.

Are you sure the envelopes actually have your address? Our mailman (we are zone for Maury) regularly delivers our neighbors mail to us.

Disagree. Take to school and OSSE. Keep a copy.

Don't you think with 2 other kids involved - that it's more likely a typo of someone putting in your address wrong entering their info or something. The parents would have to prove their address/residency when they enroll and probably wouldn't be able to do that. Chill out on the bitterness, particularly since it seems really odd. Just report the 'mistake' to school and OSSE (and keep a copy if you want to be able to confirm later that they didn't register with your address)...

It is so ridiculous that it is so easy to cheat and so difficult to turn people in. I think DC residents should ban together to bring a lawsuit against OSSE to compel them to follow thier own rules.

It's strange. The kids have almost the same last name but one letter off. I just want to make sure we won't have any issues when we get into Maury in two years and we use our address! I know my daughter will be just fine at daycare for another year and that our chances were slim to get in. Thanks all for the advice!

OP-have you ever received mail for other dcps kids before? Maybe it is a glitch in the system somehow.

Is your address an apt. building? If so, it could be that people are sharing an address that "works".

I know of at least one rental building that is known as an address to use to get in bounds status at an upper nw elem. Someone in the lease office that is um..helpful.
