recommendations for site seeing trips with au pair and kids

We want to do some site seeing trips (within driving distance) over some weekends when our au pair is with us. The idea would be that the trips would be kid frinedly and good for the au pair, who likes to travel and has said she wants to site see with us. Does anyone have any ideas? I am already thinking, for example, Annapolis, Williamsburg, and one trip up to NY. I'd like the kids and the au pair to have a site seeing variety. So, for example, the NY trip is for big city things and the Wiliamsburg is to explore colonial America.

What places have visited with your au pair that were big hits? Also, how did you handle rooms, meals, expenses etc? I am assuming I pay for the au pair and have to budget for that? In terms of locations, the closer the better but I am willing to go a bit farther for a big return (but would prefer to limit it to things to day trips or places we can do over a 2 or 3 day weekend in a car). Also, it would be great to get recommendations for places that don't cost that much. THANK YOU for any advice you can give!

Haven't done it with an au pair yet (our first one arrives in August) but we had a really nice sightseeing trip with our kids to Philadelphia. We did the Franklin museum (i forget what it's called exactly) one day and did the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall stuff one day. We ate at the cheesy colonial tavern for dinner one night and it was fun and pretty decent. It's an easy drive and made for a nice quick trip. Has some of the american culture and history stuff along with being a new city to see.
