Langley High School Pyramid

Anonymous
Have two middle schoolers and looking to move from Fairfax side to Langley High School pyramid. My kids are very active in school but I have seen some not so good reviews on Langley. We are a family of colour and need some Insight on diversity in Langley and whether my kids are likely to face any issues settling in school and making making friends and the environment in general. We are a very down to earth family and we feel a bit nervous. Any recent or current parents on board?

i went to Langley many years ago, and at that time it was totally fine. few black students, but many latino, asian, indian, etc. my understanding is that since that time the average income has shot up dramatically, and people are a little more out of touch. not sure how that would impact your experience as a poc, but take it fwiw

There are few Hispanic students at Langley now and even fewer low-income students. Every other high school in FCPS has at least 8-10% low-income kids. At Langley (and TJ) it's more like 1-2%. If the "One Fairfax" resolution means anything, FCPS must redistrict Langley to add some lower SES areas to the school.

Drugs and alcohol in abundance. Too many empty houses, too much money.

There are wealthy parents who give their kids a modest allowance and middle-income parents elsewhere who spoil their kids and let them get away with all sorts of stuff. Don't stereotype - it just makes you look bitter.

They might be happier at McLean HS where there are a few more AA families.

OP asked for views from recent or current parents. Doubt any pps fit that description.

OP, I have a recent Langley grad. I think you'd do better by looking as stats online and going to the school. Go to the McLean Giant, Hardware store, family diner. Outside of Asian, there's not a lot of "people of color" as you describe your family. That aside, I think think your family would fine a welcoming environment and your kids will have an excellent educational experience.

We are a white family with 2 kids at Langley. My kids like Langley and have had no problems there. They are in the honors/AP classes, both introverted but get along fine socially (meaning no bullying or anything, have friends at school). I've asked them before if they are aware of bullying going on there and they have not seen it (which of course does not mean it does not exist just that it is not a noticeable part of the culture). I don't know what the enrollment is in terms of race. I think tolerance and acceptance is a regular part of the program drilled into them and I think the administration would come down hard of kids falling afoul of that. I am not aware of any racially charged incidents there while my kids have been there. One plays a sport but neither are into sports or the extracurriculars offered at school. There are drugs and alcohol but they stay away. We talk to them and ask questions. The older one has handled himself well when he has found himself in those kind of situations. We know about it because he has told us. They like the new principal, they like 95% of their teachers and respect them. So it's a win for us. BTW we chose this area 12 years ago so the kids could attend Langley some day.

We are in the Langley pyramid and so far, we like it. You are not going to see very much black/Hispanic diversity, you will have white, Middle Eastern, East Asian and South Asian diversity. You are not going to have a dirt poor population, but you will have a mix of wealthy and middle class.

Academics are great, my kids have friends and are happy (we're middle class), etc. We live in Great Falls, b the way, and really love it.

There is no middle class at Langley, only slightly less rich people. You probably have to live in that bubble not to realize this.

OP here. Many thanks for the feedback. I will think a bit more and make a decision. While DH and I are ok, it's just the kids I am a little concerned about. Probably I should not worry and continue to cultivate a culture of openness so that they can be feel free to share their experience if we move.

In my neighborhood, we have white, Indian, Chinese, Arabs and maybe some Europeans. Culturally, I think it's fairly diverse.

In a county where the average high school is 34% black and Hispanic, Langley is roughly 6%. Enough said for the "diversity" there.
