| We are looking to find a class on bike riding for our 8 year old son. He id high functioning ASD but has gross motor skill challenges and gets easily frustrated when he has trouble mastering a skill. We know REI provides lessons, even one-on-one options, but these are now only available at a park in VA and we live in northern Rockville. We have tried to do this ourselves to help him graduate from training wheels (which he wants to do) but have not been successful and feel he would benefit from someone who has more experience. Thanks. |

They work on this at Basic Concepts camp, it focuses on social thinking and meets at St. Elizabeth's school in southern Rockville. Their year round offices are near Montgomery college, I don't know if they could do bikes there, but they could probably give you some leads if you call.

OP, check out the I Can Bike program offered by http://icanshine.org. Perhaps there's one being conducted near you.
Fairfax County Public Schools sponsors I Can Bike programs at various schools during spring, open only to FCPS special needs students. Perhaps you can contact your school system to see if they are open to hosting a program? |

Not lessons but what worked for us.. I bought a kids stationary bike and then invested in a very light weight bike.. most kids bikes are very heavy.

my son with mild CP did the I Can Bike (called something else) a few years back - it was FABULOUS! He did it in Arlington. |
| I'd try the bike programs through REI. My DD has similar issues and it took two classes. Most kids are riding in one. |
+2 Two of my kids did this (one kid had to do it twice) and it was WONDERFUL! The classes are at no cost to you but fill up quickly. I used to put a tickler on my calendar and I would go to the website to see if a program opened up. I highly, highly recommend it. |
| Good suggestions from PPs but wanted to add that you may want to try a balance bike if you haven't already. Or you can take the training wheels and pedals off of his current bike and see how he does with that. You have to lower the seat so he can kind of scoot along. Our child with gross motor delays learned really fast on a balance bike. |

+1 Our kid with gross motor delays finally mastered it on his own when we took the training wheels and pedals off the bus me. |
Bike, not bus me I

My son also did this program through FCPS. He did it last year and was riding on the third day! It is an amazing program!! I know that Arlington Parks & Rec also offers it and they allow people outside of Arlington to register (the FCPS program is only for FCPS students). |
