Hi! I'm currently a preschool/vpk (voluntary pre-k) teacher in Florida. My family will be (knock-on-wood) moving to the Arlington area this summer. When we move, I would like to have a job lined up. The thing is, I've taught young children for a number of years, in a variety of settings. I know that there are good schools, great schools, and scary as hell ones. We are going up in April to look at housing. We are also trying to get several interviews set up. I want to narrow my search a little.

I am looking for a school that is child-centered, learning by play. It's fine if there is an academic curriculum, but I would love to be in a place that encourages learning through fun experiences...not worksheets. I would also love to find a place that has (or at least encourages) active parent involvement.

If anyone could give me the names of any good schools that you think I might like, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Country Day School in McLean, Virginia. Very convenient to North Arlington. Considers itself a developmental preschool - focuses on what is developmentally appropriate. Check out the website - countryday.org

I believe that Kinhaven in Arlington/Ballston is currently hiring. It is play based.

School for Friends is an amazing pre-school in the district. NAEYC accredited and around for 25+ years. Play bases education, quaker values, and a great student/teacher/parent culture. www.schoolforfriends.org

Sounds really similar to the Bright Horizons philosophy. My child is enrolled in the Silver Spring site, but I know they have them all over the DC area and in VA. I think if you go to their website you can get their recruiters information (www.brighthorizons.com).
