So I told my 7 y.o. that if he reads 10 books by the end of the summer I'd buy him a skateboard. (Yes. It's bribery. I'm cool with that.)
What I am wondering, from those of you in the know, is what does a decent but not too crazy skateboard set up for a beginner cost? Board, trucks, wheels, bearings? Thanks. |
| ...P.S. I've already thought of and priced safety equipment (helmet/pads). |
| I purchased a complete board from Amazon.com for ~$50 for my beginner 7 year old...he loves it! |
| Thanks! |

I got son his board when he was 6. I paid about 140 the a complete board. Do not buy your son a cheap one, he can get hurt on those.
They have smaller boards for younger children. I purchase my son's board at Palace 5ive in DC. |
OP here. I totally get that. I say the same thing to folks who are buying bicycles for their kid. That said, money is a bit tight. OK, more than a bit. Is there a way around this? Lower ABEC rating on the bearings? Second-hand deck? |
Ok.I don't agree with that! You son will fall ANYWAYS,no matter how much the skateboard is. My DH is a skater and now,my DS is doing the same thing. Spend $35-40 on his first board and that will be fine. $140 for the first one? NO WAY!! |
| you can find nice used boards on ebay or craigslist. |
It has nothing to do with falling. It has to do with the quality of the board. I paid 40 dollars for my son 1st board. He rode it once. And I was like no way would I let him get back on that thing. If your son just wants to ride it, I guess that would be ok. But if he really wants to skate, then get a quality board for him. |
I don't know how this varies with quality, but some boards have faster wheels and some have slower. DS complained for a while about his slow wheels, but I was OK with that Recently we broke down and got him one for about $80 with faster wheels.
One thing we insist on is wrist guards. He broke his wrist (doing something else) and I don't want it to happen again. He complains, but wears them. |
OP here. I hear you lound and clear on wrist guards. Thanks! |
