Hilton Head Saturday Traffic (Spring Break Week)

Anonymous
We've been to Outerbanks and the Saturday traffic is atrocious. Is it the same at Hilton Head?

We typically will do long drives without stopping overnight, but is it bad enough at Hilton Head to consider breaking up the trip? Or could we leave at maybe 4AM and avoid heavy traffic?

Leave by 5:30 AM and you will avoid the heavy traffic. It's an easy drive once but you have to get through Richmond by 7:30 AM.

Leaving at 4 -530 will get tot around heaven traffic between DC and Richmond. The odds of you hitting heavy traffic further down on 95 are pretty high and most likely you will hit heavy traffic driving through bluffton and getting on HHI.

That's my concern, if we leave early enough we can probalby cruise down 95 no problem, but once we get to Hilton Head is there alot of Saturday traffic to get on the island? That's why debating leaving the night before, crashing at a hotel, then short early drive the next morning...

Friday afternoon traffic will suck too, unless you are going to leave in the morning.

While the number of cars on 95 "may" decrease the further south you go, so do the number of lanes. So the ratio of cars to roadway stays about the same.

We do the drive over the summer and try to leave DC around 4 on Saturday. We miss all DC and Richmond traffic and hit minimal traffic getting onto the island. We've tried different times, but this has been our winner. Also, if we stop for lunch and breaks, we get in by 2:30, so have time to rest up before dinner.

There is not a traffic problem at Hilton head during spring break. Just like every other Carolina beach, it's off-season until Memorial Day.

There are a lot of other places that people go to where 95 is the easiest route. The traffic isn't about Hilton Head it is about 95.

Yes. The poster asked if there was traffic like getting over the intercoastal, and said they were thinking about getting close by to stop Friday night. Everyone knows 95 can be congested any holiday weekend. Island traffic will not be an issue.

Funny because I am sitting in a virtual stand still not even to Bluffton trying to get to HHI right now.

And I just spoke to a family friend who is leaving our house on HHI and they said just Saturday traffic no accidents.

Take Bluffton Parkway once you get to 278 - it parallels 278 and no traffic. No one seems to know about it. Google it.

Reviving an old thread. We're currently on Hilton Head Island and heading back to D.C. on Saturday. What's a good time to leave HHI Sat morning in order to avoid return local/bridge traffic?
