Looking "white"

Anonymous
I am a Pakistani American woman. I am told I look ethnically ambiguous. I have fair skin, dark hair and a long thin nose. I look WASP-ish as I wear my hair straight and short, wear pearl earrings, clean cut clothes and minimal eye makeup.

My sisters all dress more typically ethnic. They look more obviously ethnic; darker skin, shorter built, large noses and small eyes. They also wear their hair long and wavy, dark eyeliner and heavy makeup.

They always accuse me of "looking and dressing white"

Why should I be expected to dress and look ethnic?

You're fine the way you are, however that is. Do what makes you comfortable.

This.

My nieces are mixed race and look very different from each other. They are awesomely close though.

Ignore the comments from your sisters and/or remind them that sisters are there for love and support--not cutting each other down.

The actress Rashida Jones looks different from her sisters, BTW:

Genetics are extremely random.

You're as insecure as it gets

Agree with the fact that you are insecure. I'm South Asian and look ethnically ambiguous but have never been accused of purposely looking "white".

Perhaps they get the feeling that you are trying to 'pass' and act superior to them in your ability to. The way you describe them isn't exactly flattering- short, large nose, small eyes.

You sound pretty full of yourself and think you're more beautiful because you can pass as a WASPy white woman.

It almost seems like there are a handful of posters just like this who go around gleefully responding to posts like "BAM!" then moving on to the next one and repeat.

+2. You sound highly conceited because you look more white than them. Who the hell cares...just you, trust me.

OP I'm ethnically Korean but dress pretty preppy. I'll never look waspy for obvious reasons but I'll never look like a KPop Star with pasty white skin and large eye lids either. I dress to my environment and feel good about how I look. too much shit to deal with. cant think about dressing ethnically

OP, I moved past worrying about this kind once I graduated high school. Are you and your sisters very young?
Anonymous
OP, trust me, you don't look WASP-ish. Most WASPs don't look the part either.

I don't, but your post makes me cringe. And yes it reeks of insecurity. You seem to be fixated on how you look, how people view you, etc.
theres so much hatred thrown at us everyday and this is the thing you focus on? Shining beacon.

I'm Bangladeshi American, but most people think I am half-white and I sometimes will get called a coconut (brown on the outside, white on the unsaid). But, I don't care. Why do you care? You do you.
