TJ Essay Question

Now that the admission results are out, what was the answer to this years essay prompt? What was the essay asking, because many of DS friends seem to have misinterpreted the prompt. Was it asking for the final answer or formula? If so, what was the formula?

It was asking for both. Formula is some number (can't remember) to the power of years.

I don't think the right answer matters as my kid didn't get the formula but was still accepted.

DS was accepted but says he thought the problem was tricky, because there was a way to solve it and then a more advanced way to solve it. maybe the answer itself wasn't as important as knowing and identifying a different method of solving the problem.

My son thought it was easy and solved it pretty simply. But he is a math nut. Didn't use more than 1500 characters. For others, they may have had issues.

The formula is based on exponential growth (Algebra 2)

Lots of kids had different answers. And quite a few with the "wrong" answer got in. They are looking for thinking skills as evidenced by what you write as opposed to the right answer.

My son got into TJ. He has not made up his mind yet. One of the decision points is athletics. How good is the athletic program in TJ? Can a not-too-sporty kid get into one of the varsity teams? My son likes Basketball and Golf but no way he would make the team at our local high schools.. Are TJ athletic teams as competitive as local high schools?
