Luxating Patella

| Just found out our dog needs surgery for a luxating patella. Has anyone been through this before or have a surgeon rec? Also, what's the recovery like? Thanks! |

| Our 8 month old kitten had bilateral luxating patella surgery 2.5 weeks ago at South Paws Animal Hospital in Merrifield, VA. Cost was $4,150 and surgeon was Dr. Brehem. Brehem was recommended by our veterinarian, in fact that is who she takes her own dogs to. The recovery is slow, especially with 2 knees at once, but so far so good. Cat was standing on the 2nd day. Spent 2 nights in the hospital and then came home with 5 days of pain medicine. I felt they took excellent care of him. |

Do dogs have Patellas? When the kneecap is dislocated from the groove of the thigh bone, it can only be returned to its normal position once the quadriceps muscles in the hind legs of the animal relax and lengthen. It is for this reason that most dogs with the condition will hold up their hind legs for a few minutes. |
