Teachers signed up for this job. Why do they need to only work 4 days a week? We don't need religious holidays. We don't need weeks off in the winter. We don't need 5 days off for Memorial Day. Kids shouldn't be getting the bare minimum! You won't convince me otherwise. |
And likewise you won’t convince me that we absolutely need 5 day weeks. |
No, "we" don't need it, but the students do. |
Because you're mediocre and have a mediocre outlook and if you have kids, they're likely mediocre academically. |
+1 What professional rages about the absolute minimum? Smh |
And the turnover is higher than it's ever been because many are leaving what they "signed up for." The workload is crushing. If we don't find more time for them to get their work done during their contracted hours, turnover isn't going to get any better. Maybe a rotation of random subs in your child's class will convince you otherwise. |
Dp. This is unnecessarily harsh, but it gets at a phenomenon in this area. The top kids don't need a lot of repetition in order to get concepts down and get problems right. They need repetition in order to "grok," and many parents in the county understand that. UMC parents here give their kids extra math enrichment. Every week, they're doing more academics at home or in enrichment classes, not less. |
You’re sorely mistaken. Less time around the mediocre masses at school is actually better for my kids. Your kid who needs that 5 day week is probably bringing my kid down. |
You seem to be equating that the bare minimum of hours required in the state of VA is the same as bare minimum of grade level standards. Is your child in AAP? They teach more than the “bare minimum” of the standard and that is particularly obvious in math. |
If there is some spare time, how about adding more material. |
Not in FCPS. And there’s plenty of time in contracted hours— snow days, federal holidays, etc. |
If your kid needs that, they should be in AAP where there is more material. This is a very capitalistic view. Work just gets you more work. Can you explain why you think kids should be taught this at age 5-6? In your mind, is that the way you “get ahead” and “be best?” I’m genuinely curious why more material and getting farther is so important to you. Win the future kind of stuff hasn’t really worked for us here in the USA. |
When did federal holidays become contracted hours? Those are unpaid days off for contracted staff. |
Yes, more reading, more writing, going deeper into subjects. All people here seem to want is the bare minimum to pass a mediocre test. Why? So kids can sleep in and teachers can rest. It's pathetic. |
My kid isn't 5. My kid is in MS and is in AAP and I have yet to see them do much of anything other than learn material to pass a mediocre test. |
