| I've never heard of a dog winking as a humor thing. Are you sure he doesn't have an irritant in his eye? Or maybe a little cyst or pimple there? Dogs will stare at you if they want something--maybe he wants you to fix his eye? |

My dog is part border collie and he stares at my face a lot. He will wink, then I wink back. The game can go on and on for long time. Just wondering what a wink means to dog.

This is the cutest question I have ever come across on the pet board!
One theory is that your dog is imitating you - you wink, so your dog winks. Another is that the dog is winking to express affection. My guess is that the dog winked once, got a positive reaction - saw how delighted you were - and now thinks this is a fun game you two play. Which it is! |

My shepherd winks at me too! Usually, it's when he's calm,content, and looking at me. I'll say something cutesy to him, sometimes a question, and on cue, he'll wink. I usually mention it to my husband when it happens. Sounds like he's not the only winker!
