| My son (12) was told that he should get a pair of jammers and/or a speedo type suit for dive team which he is dreading. Anyone have any advice on what kind to get and where? Want to make sure it is somewhat cool and I'm not sure where to begin - thanks. |
| Ask the coach. Jammers are usually for swim and the tiny speedo suits are for dive. May need a team suit with their logo. |

Jammers are fine for dive at this age. Any sporting goods store or swim shop will have them; also some on line outlets. If he is really self-conscious, buy a size up, but not too big. If there is a team logo suit, just get that one (swim suits can be expensive). As for cool ... well, best you can do is get mostly black with team color accents.
BTW, the boys eventually get used to the suits and it becomes a non-issue. |
| Amazon has them too, sometimes cheaper but their prices fluctuate. My son and husband switched to jammers after swim team and now prefer them. Different brands fit differently and sizing is not always accurate. |
| He may want to try on if he has never worn one. Capital Sport and Swim in Kensington, MD is a local option and Sport fair in Arlington, VA. Look for their sale box (usually discounted suits from last season). Once you know your size, swimoutlet.com |
Kensington does not have any on sale now. In there a week ago. |
| My DS started dive last year at 11. All the boys wear jammers, except one older boy (16) who wears the speedo type suit. The team suit is usually sold at whatever shop your swim/dive club uses. They will have them in by May. At first my DS was self conscious in it, but by the middle of summer, it was the only swimsuit he would use. I wasted money on his two regular swimsuits. Won't do that this year. |
| Jammers -- go to Sport Fair in Arlington and try some on -- the right size for your son will look super tiny until they are on him. |

I have a couple of sons on swim team and have bought a lot of jammers. For the first pair, go to a swim shop and have him try on different brands. Each brand fits differently. TYR fits larger than Speedo. Once you know which brand fits the best, you can get good deals at swimoutlet.com. My son likes the ones with funky designs on the side. One of my sons is larger and was very self conscious, but allowing him to pick out his own suit helped.
He will probably need the team suit and a few practice suits. Our team isn't allowed to wear team suits for practice (only for meets.) |
