book recommendation for young DS

DS (12) really wants to see Moonlight. I think he's too young for this, for reasons that have nothing to do with the protagonist being gay. We compromised on finding a movie or book that he could read in which the main character is young and gay (maybe unsure), and preferably a minority. Can anyone recommend a book or a movie for him?
