Private & Independent Schools
| Its expensive but I don't think the kids seem to do as well on standardized tests or get accepted to good universities. However, on great schools I saw a post that said they require conformance rather than allowing kids to think 'outside of the box.' Anyone have any information at all on Flint Hill? This is my second time asking, I hope somebody knows something about this school. |
| FWIW I know the Head of Burgundy sends his daughter to Flint Hill.... she went to Burgundy until 8th grade, then Flint Hill. This is definitely not a family that would value conformity, so.... |
| While the 22:17's statement may be true, it is not something by which to judge... |
| Yes I did hear the Head of Burgundy sent her daughter to Flint Hill. I would like very much to get to know her to learn more about Flint Hill! Maybe she is sending her there because after 8th grade, she felt she had no alternative in VA? |
| 14:15 ... you are a complete idiot or you have heard nothing of the kind or both. The head of Burgundy is a guy. |
|
16:46, I was confusing the head of school for a trustee at Burgundy whose child did go from Burgundy to Flint Hill. In any event, maybe the head of school felt there weren't that many alternatives in VA.
Yikes. I really hope you don't have a job that involves human contact. You're a grouch. |
| I live a block away from that trustee, and my kids go to Burgundy. I can attest that Flint Hill is a MUCH more difficult commute from Burgundy's location than options in DC. The trustee chose Flint Hill despite its being very far away from us. |
| If you want to know about Flint Hill, the scope of this discussion will have to broaden. Give it time. |
I'm new to this area. What about Potomac? Is it better than Flint Hill and why isn't that a more appealing option for Burgundy grads. The univ/colleges kids from Potomac are going to, according to their web site, are good schools...U Penn, Duke, Georgetown, etc... But the univ/colleges the kids from Flint Hill went to are not so stellar, very average. |
|
Some Burgundy kids do go to Potomac. I think it varies year to year. Some years, like this year, a slice of the top Burgundy kids opt for public school*, though there was an excellent acceptance rate to "top" DC schools.
* The Burgundy class about to enter sophomore year in college for example, had stellar college admissions coming through both Alexandria public HS and area privates. |
| Sorry, I answered about Burgundy, but not Flint Hill. Since I only know third hand, I'll leave that to those who have first-hand experiences. |
| I think Flint Hill might be better than Potomac for those students who need a bit of extra help. Flint Hill has an excellent study skills assistance program, for example. |
I think the previous poster was referring to the best options for "Burgundy kids", not the best private school options in general. If you search through this board and ask around, you'll find that Burgundy is a good school that definitely attracts passionate families who are looking for a small, very nurturing, very "progressive", very accepting community. It's hard to define the families exactly without sounding stereotypical, but, in general, you could describe Burgundy kids as those who are more "creative/alternative/liberal", and perhaps less focused on things like competitive sports than some of their peers at other private schools. Potomac, on the other hand, tends to attract a more preppy crowd that's equally focused on a traditional academic curriculum, sports, arts, etc. Potomac is perhaps more rigorous and demanding - and is generally considered one of the top private schools not only in the DC metro area, but nationally as well. These are general stereotypes... so don't hold true 100%. There are certainly some jocks to be found at Burgundy, and certainly some more alternative crowd to be found at schools like Potomac. I think the PP was suggesting that Flint Hill might be a better option for a "Burgundy type kid" than Potomac. I'm not sure if this is correct or not, as I'm not very familiar with Flint Hill. |
| No, I was not suggesting that Flint Hill is better for a Burgundy-type kid than Potomac. My impression is that both Flint Hill and Potomac are "preppy." Sidwell and GDS attracted many more Burgundy applicants than Potomac or Flint Hill. |

I don't see how a Burgundy family would fit-in at Potomac.
