Breastfeeding and my nipples smell like yeast...

Anonymous
I'm breastfeeding and noticed today that my nipples smell like yeast. Baby's breath also smells like yeast. No other symptoms other than the fact that baby has been sick with a bad cold--she's almost 7 months. I'm guessing this might be thrush? What do I do? Who is the best provider to treat me/us--pediatrician? OB? Regular doc?

When I suspected thrush, my midwife was able to prescribe APNO. Maybe try that as a first defense?

If either of you have thrush, you both need to be treated so you'll need to see/ call both. I'd go to the ped then call your ob when you have a diagnosis. The ped is not going to prescribe without seeing baby, but the ob will call in meds for you or you can do over the counter anti fungal ointment.

midwife/ob. APNO is a lifesaver as well as using a medication.

When I had thrush, I went to the pedi, and he wrote rxs for both me and my baby.

The stuff used to treat athletes foot can be used on your nipples (basically it's what they'd put in APNO or you can take orally). You can pick it up at a drug store. Wipe it off before baby nurses.

The telltale sign of thrush is baby's white mouth, not a smell.

^ to treat baby, you need a prescription.
