Our puppy is about 5 months old weighs 35lbs. We take her out before we go to bed at 10pm. She sleeps until 4am whines, we take her out and she will either pee or do both #1 and 2. We've tried taking her out at 12:30am but will still get up at 4am. After 4 am she gets up at 6am to start her day.
Should I be weaning her from this 4am potty break or will she eventually grow out of it? Also, at what point can you take your dog out at 9pm and be good all night til morning? 10pm is kind of late for us.... |
She'll probably grow out of it, but can consider taking away water bowl earlier in evening. |

Our puppies always did the for the first year. After that they started to sleep in a little longer.
Our 2 year old pup rarely sleeps past 6am. |
| My 13 yr old dog wakes me up at 4/4:30 every morning, so maybe. After about a year, they start sleeping a little later. At least she's waking you up and not having an accident in the house. That's a good dog. |

You take her out at 10pm, but when's the last time she had real exercise? My neighborhood makes a 1 mile loop, so I walk the mile at 8:30 every night, potty again at 10pm, then she'll sleep until about 6am.
Also, keep in mind that it's an hour per month for their bladders. So, really, you've got it pretty good that she's making it to 4am. |
| What kind of dog? Our black lab could do 10pm - 7/8am easily by about 6 months. |

Does your pup has enough exercise? my 5 month old GR sleeps like a baby 10 pm - 7 am if he had good long walks during the day, and good play/running around time - fetch, cath me if you can, or even hide & seek with kids around the house (everybody's favorite game).
If for some reason dog has plenty of energy at the end of the day - he wakes up several times a night in ungodly hours - 2 am, than 5 am, or cry in the middle of the night for attention (he's crated in guest room overnight). just my $0.02 |
| This will pass OP. My puppy was driving me crazy with this type of thing early on. He is a year now and goes out for the last time around 8-8:30, then typically around 7 am! It's a pretty amazing transformation (and he's a small dog too). |
| As suggested, I would cut off her water at a certain time (maybe 8 pm) and if it doesn't pass, I would have your vet check for a possible UTI. |

Smaller the dog, smaller the bladder. Not all are equal.
Follow his needs for now for another month or two. Dogs usually can make one hour per month of life.. so if she is 5 mo, then this makes 5 hours more less.. up untill a year.. then you can expect around 12 hours from big breed. It is usually until some 8 or 9 months that they need to go more often and around a year you can take charge and dicate your timing and they will nicely adjust. |

Yup- the rule of thumb is one hour for every month old. Until you get to 8. That should be the upper limit.
Be thankful that your pup is letting you know they have to go! Way to go with housetraining! It gets easier
