Prince George's Co. schools closed Wednesday for Day Without A Woman

Prince George's County Public Schools will be closed Wednesday for A Day Without A Woman.

PGCPS released the following statement on Tuesday:

"Throughout Prince George’s County Public Schools, a high number of school-based and support staff have requested leave for Wednesday, March 8. As of 5:30 p.m., approximately 1,700 teachers and 30 percent of transportation staff have requested leave. We cannot transport students and provide safe, productive learning environments without adequate staff. As a result, schools will be closed tomorrow for students. We apologize for the inconvenience this will surely cause to many families.

All employees will be expected to report for work or follow the normal procedures for leave requests.

Based on our policies, PGCPS and the Prince George’s County Board of Education have no political stance on “A Day Without a Woman.” Schools will open Thursday, March 9 on a normal schedule."

Alexandria City schools will also be closed on Wednesday.

+1000. It was a bad idea a week ago, but to pull this the night before? What are working moms supposed to do if dad can't jump in?

This is ridiculous and looks horrible on the working moms that want to go to work but can not because we have to stay home with our kids now.

+ 1000. Makes teachers look bad too. What happened to "best interests of the children"?

Agree. it's insane. But the notice makes it clear it is the fault of the teachers. If the schools can't safely operate then they get their stupid day off and to hell with the rest of us who now have to scramble for child care.

I respect the decision, but hate that it was made so late. I would be very frustrated as a PG parent!

This makes me really nervous MCPS will close with little notice.

The superintendent was interviewed on WTOP earlier. He apologized and said that after hours requests for tomorrow poured in and he did not have enough teachers, bus drivers or support staff to meet state requirements on student teacher ratios and so had to cancel minute. He was very apologetic for the short notice. So, the teachers and school staff are creating large problems for working mothers throughout the county.

Teachers must have started calling out sick this afternoon to take tomorrow off, instead of asking for leave in advance through personal leave.

Not the superintendent's fault it was so late notice, although he could have sent out a survey asking how many people planned to participate, I suppose.

Our school district has a shortage of substitutes and bus drivers on a good day, so it doesn't take much to make it unsafe to operate school safely.

If they haven't announced anything by now you should be fine. People who were going to call out sick should have done so by now, except the genuinely sick people who wake up ill in the morning of course.

Wah.

-not a teacher but sick of these threads blaming teachers. They are not your privately paid daycare provider and don't need your permission or approval to take a personal day.
