Which island in Bahamas and best time to go?

We are trying to plan a trip to the Bahamas with three kids, ages 9, 6, and 4. We like very calm, clear water but we also enjoy walking around town and doing things besides laying on the beach all day. My elderly father may join us as well and even though he is in good health, it worries me to be too far from medical care. I feel like Nassau is touristy and the beaches are not that great but maybe I'm wrong? Any input would be great, thanks!

| We recently went to Harbour Island and really enjoyed it. I would go May-September, when the water is warm enough to swim. The only downside is the small possibility of hurricane. |
