if she was white trash already she wouldn't need the cookbook right? maybe it's self-deprecating humor on the part of the MIL.

It may have been a blow, but it's actually a highly-praised, very good southern cookbook--has been around since the 80s. I'd use it.

+2. My family of origin is considered white trash by most and I'd be seriously pissed to receive a gift like that from a future MIL or other future in law. Calling someone white trash is generally seen/taken as making a judgement about their family, not just them. You don't like me? Fine. Don't bring my family into it.
