Bride to be received "White Trash Cook Book" at shower from MIL. A gag or a shot across the bow?

Anonymous
Would you take the book as a funny gag gift? The bride is devastated and angry.

What is the current state of bride-MIL relationship?

if she was white trash already she wouldn't need the cookbook right? maybe it's self-deprecating humor on the part of the MIL.

but too hard to tell since OP didn't provide enough context.

I was at a shower and the bride received a bath scale from MIL. The bride had gained weight prior to the wedding, it wasn't a joke. No one thought it was cool.

Doesn't much matter Op. These are people to avoid.

It may have been a blow, but it's actually a highly-praised, very good southern cookbook--has been around since the 80s. I'd use it.

Bride-to-be is probably in for a lifetime of misery from that MIL. Already MIL seems mean and crass, and wants other people to know it.

Maybe the MIL is being funny about her own family? They'd be the ones who are "white trash" in the scenario, right?
Anonymous
I think its wrong to do. You should be more welcoming to your DIL instead of being like, Heheheheh, here is a white trash book.

Woww.

Well, it's only a joke if both parties think it's funny. So clearly, based on the bride's response, it was NOT a joke.

not a good gift but w/o more sounds to me as though MIL could be feeling like bride makes her like white trash?
Anonymous
I would have smiled sweetly and given it right back to her on Mother's Day.

+2. My family of origin is considered white trash by most and I'd be seriously pissed to receive a gift like that from a future MIL or other future in law. Calling someone white trash is generally seen/taken as making a judgement about their family, not just them. You don't like me? Fine. Don't bring my family into it.
