Lyon Park Jr. High

Anonymous
We're considering making an offer on a house in the Lyon Park area of Arlington. We're a bit hestitant because my husband has heard and read that the Jr. high is not good and one realtor told us it was terrible (even as he was trying to sell us a house in the neighborhood). Anyone have kids there or decided not to send their kids to the jr. high? How do you find it or has anyone heard anything diffeernt about the quality of the school. TIA!

Which Middle School is it? It should be on the MLS listing for the property. You can go on the Arlington County website and find all sorts of info on all the schools. All of the schools in Arlington are very good. That is surprising about the realtor because they are not supposed to say anything about schools. I live N.Arlington and am very happy with the schools.

The Middle School is TJ. Your real estate's information is dated.

Many local families do send their kids there - we will do so eventually. The school has a very, very diverse population - I think that's a plus, but not everyone does. It does have a "reputation" among some, but I've yet to hear the school trashed by someone I actually respect. The IB prep program is there. The physical plant isn't great, but is scheduled for a refresh.

Kenmore has a better facility, and some of the neighborhood kids go there. Personally, I prefer TJ's smallness. Kenmore is giant and has cut some of the programs for the more academically able students.

If you are looking for that "North Arlington" experience and less socioeconomic diversity in your children's schools (for better or worse - I'm not judging), you should look further north than Lyon Park. We love it here, though.
