Do you still have/use checks?
So many people mention they no longer use or even have/keep checks around. I am filling out my child's field trip form and it's for $28. It says "cash or check only". Really, sending in a check in this instance would be easier than sending in $28 cash. I'm not even sure I have $8 in singles or even a $5 and $3 singles. Making that change right now would take effort, and I have checks. We recently had an emergency home repair and they only took cash or check. It was nearly $1000. We paid with a check, otherwise I would have had to run to the ATM with the plumber at our house! We also have our boat in storage. We mail a check (they don't do credit card.) I could walk in and pay them the $500 cash, but slapping a stamp on the bill with a check is exponentially easier. So, are there really people out there who don't use checks? |
| I write checks for 1.) camps 2.) academic tutor 3.) the dry cleaner (he delivers and I leave a check for him in the mailbox) and 4.) the girl who does my alterations. Now 2 and 4 aren't really a business...just people make extra money so thats why they don't take credit. |
| I too use checks often. The in home daycare takes a check weekly. We also give checks for weddings, baptisms, births, etc. |
| PP here with the first reply...yes I write checks for gifts too...good point. We had like 10 graduations and first communions this year so I was always writing a check. I agree that a nice crisp 100 or 50 looks nicer in the card but its a lot more effort on my part. |
| I mostly use checks for kid-related stuff, or when service people come to our house. However, my debit card was hijacked last week so I had to write a check at the grocery store. The cashier couldn't get the register to accept it and had to get a manager to help her. |
Plus you shouldn't mail cash. You can cancel a check if it doesn't arrive. |
True but to be fair these were all in person parties I attended. |

Yes, to my cleaners, the piano teacher, and the elementary school (lunch account, field trip, etc.)
If you run through my register it is literally these three names over and over again. Every once and awhile there will be a home repair person who doesn't take credit or charges extra for using credit cards, but this is increasingly rare. We are about to get a flagstone walkway. That will be by check I'm sure. |
| I write checks. Accepting credit cards costs 3%, which is not insignificant for a lot of these small businesses, like photographers, landscapers, preschools, tutors, etc. Big businesses, I do use credit cards. |
| You can go to your bank and for $1 get a single check, or a couple (not talking about a cashier's/certifified check) |
| I pay the mortgage by check so we can pay extra principal. Also to the college fund and a few other things, especially school. |
For $15 through my bank, I can get like, 500 of them. And I don't have to travel to the bank to get them each time I need them. I order them online. |
| all the time. paper trail of my finances and off the grid as much as possible. |

Rent, certain bills that I pay that are in others' names, tons of school and kids' activity fees.

| We got free checks from credit Union bank. We use the checks for fees from school. |
