OK - we are starting TTC #2 and I have been charting for the last few months.

I definitely had a temp shift this AM. My husband has been out of town for the last 3 days and will be returning tonight. If we BD tonight have we absolutely missed the window?

Here is what I remember - please correct me ....
Temp shift occurs when you ovulate. So if I take my temp each morning and I saw a shift today, I ovulated sometime over the previous 24 hours.
At ovulation, an egg is released and the egg will "live" / can be fertilized for upto 24 hours

So assuming I ovulated around midnight last night, BD tonight might be within the window - correct?

You can give it a try but I think you have probably missed the window this time. But stranger things have happened, so I say go for it anyway!

You are correct that temp shift indicates you have already ovulated, so if you temp rose this morning, you ovulated sometime yesterday. If you actually ovulated late at night, as you are guessing, there is a chance the egg could survive until tonight. An egg lives for 12-24 hours, so 24 hrs is kind of pushing it; it often starts to degrade by the 12-hr mark. And the sperm need some time to swim to their destination (I think it can take a day or two for them to swim up through the cervix and wait by the fallopian tubes for an egg to be released) - so that builds in additional time before fertilization can occur. I know I have read/seen studies showing that sex on the day before ovulation results in more pregnancies than sex the day of ovulation, and it's for that reason, that the sperm need time to swim to the tubes where they wait for an egg.

Hopefully you have a very hardy egg that'll hold out until tonight and your dh has some super fast swimmers! Good Luck!

Agree with PP. Definitely try it tonight, it probably is too late but there might still be a slight chance that the egg is still alive depending on when exactly (what time) you ovulated so give it a shot, you never know...!

Sperm needs from 4 to 6hrs to reach the egg.

My 'definitely too late to get pregnant this cycle" is now 4 years old!

If you did BD right before DH left 3 days ago, I think that would give you a decent shot. His swimmers can live for quite a while and it sounds like you ovulated when they would have still been in there. Good luck!
