My daughter (age 20) and I have to go to Louisville.
Flights are cheap, but by the time I factor in rental car in Louisville, time waiting at the airport each way, time to get to the airport..... I am thinking of driving. Google maps indicates 9 hours. Any input here if you travel to Louisville? We would leave on a Wednesday and return on a Friday (late) or Saturday. How is the drive? Thanks! |

It's really pretty but really boring. 64 looks the same the entire way. There aren't too many larger cities to stop in and the roads through West Virginia can be a bit sporty in spots. Going through downtown Charleston comes to mind, maybe? Don't forget to factor in breaks too... 20 months can be a hard age to travel long distances with.
We've done that drive a few times, more than I care to count, and I would vote to fly if money isn't an issue. Especially if you're by yourself with your daughter, and it's a quick trip. At least in an airport, you guys can walk around and expend some energy before boarding the plane, and when she does have to stay quiet and seated, you can focus on keeping her happy instead of watching the road. |
Thanks PP. Sorry I wasn't clear. DD is 20 years old. Same advice? |

Oh, haha, just saw she was age 20! Not 20 months!
Most of my post still applies, just ignore the silly parts! |
Same PP. Yes, I would still vote to fly for that short of a trip. WV is pretty but the rest makes for a really long day. |

We drive to Cincinnati a lot, which is only 8 hours. Similar-ish drive. We really only drive it because it is crazy exnpensive to fly 5 people out there and rent a car that accommodate carseats.
You're only going to be there for 1.5 days if you drive. I'd fly to Louisville if I were you. But if you drive, make sure you let DD take a few shifts at that wheel. |

I have done both.
The ONLY reason I drove to Louisville, is because I had to take my bicycle with me (triathlon) and it seemed easier to just drive it out there than attempt to disassemble it, pack it, re-assemble it, etc. For just two people (only two plane tickets to purchase) I would much rather fly than drive. |
| West VA from the 64/77 intersection to Charleston goes quick for some reason. There are also back roads west of Fredericksburg that will dump you near Charlottesville that help as well. There are tolls in WVA as well to keep in mind, but they are cheap. |
| Fly on SW. |
| If you have the time, I'd drive. I have family in Louisville, and I like the time together with my teen when we go. |
Caveat: spend the night in Morgantown and have breakfast at the Blue Moose if you can. |

Definitely fly!! We have family in Lexington and drive there often. (And Louisville is even further) While you won't hit traffic it's a pretty tough drive. You have to go over the Appalachian mountains so there are lots of up and down big hills/mountains. This also makes it a terrible drive in the dark and with a 9 hour drive it's hard to time it to be completely during daylight.
I really hate the drive and try to convince my wife we should fly whenever possible. |
