First trip to Hilton Head

This will be our first trip to Hilton Head - we are going over spring break. Any "musts" for a family with an 10 year old and a 6 year old? And any good 1/2 way spots to spend the night? Thanks!

Don't break the drive up into two days, not worth it.

I would go over to Savannah for a day. Ton of miniature golf courses on HHi. Outside of the resorts it is just shopping and restaurants. There really aren't attractions per se that are must do.

Etoile Vert is one of the best restaurant choices on the island.

Delishee Yo is great for healthier treats and veg/hippie food.

Are you staying at Sea Pines? They have tons of great resort activities - small petting zoo At the stables is one of my kids' favorites.

Biking on the low country beaches is awesome - sand packed tightly makes for a very easy ride. Ditto to horseback.

Near- and mid- shore fishing is fun, we've gotten sharks and rays before (catch and release of course).

The Greg Russell show at Harbortown is a tradition. Go up to the top of the light house. And biking. We liked tennis on the clay courts.

Our favorite restaurants are Hudson's, Charbar and One Hot Mamas.

No good place to stop.

Agree about not stopping, it's doable in one day, leave this area early and you'll be there by 3 or 4.

Definitely go to Sea Pines and do the stables plus the lighthouse is scenic.

Plenty of opportunities for mini golf, biking, shopping and walking on the beach.

Savannah could be a great day trip and if you are willing to go a little farther there's Charleston with a great aquarium.

We go every year and pick a spot to break up the drive on the way down. We usually just pick a town a couple hours away and it results in a sleepless night for everyone. The only stop that we all enjoyed was Charleston but it is not exactly on the way. We booked a nice hotel, had a great dinner, walked the town in the morning, ate breakfast and were on our way. Probably not worth the money but it was nice. In Hilton Head, Sea Pines is extremely family oriented. I would rent bikes for the week. You can ride on the beach in the morning (bring stuff to catch crabs - nets, etc...) and also ride through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Definitely check out the stables and the petting zoo as recommended. Go to Harbortown and watch Greg Russel if he is playing - this might only be a summer show. Climb the light house. Watch sunset behind the light house - great views and a little gift shop on top. There is a tiny sandy area next to it where you can get great photos around sunset and collect shells. The sunset Kayak tour was worth it, you may even have a dolphin jumping very near your kayak. Go to the Sea Pines Beach Club - eat out on the deck - it's great! Can hang out there during the day too - it's public. If you aren't staying on Sea Pines, there is a small fee to enter the gates. Get ice cream at The Frozen Moo (90+ flavors). If you have a date night, Michael Anthonys is great. Red Fin is good. CQs at Harbourtown is a bit fancy but they have a good kids menu and fun kid drinks - best food at harbor town if you are going for dinner. Oh and Harbor town also has a great playground. Have fun.

I grew up vacationing on Hilton Head (stayed in Palmetto Dunes) and my parents now live on the island most of the year. It is a beautiful place! On our drives down from DC we usually stopped in Florence, S.C. As for activities, Pirate Island is my pick for mini-golf. Bikes are also great for getting around and taking rides on the beach, so plan to rent or bring your own. As for restaurants, Kenny B's near Coligny is great little Cajun place with yummy breakfast.

Shocked that people actually break up this drive.

Take the ferry to Daufuskie Island for 1/2 a day and rent a gold cart and tour the island.

Golf cart -- not "gold".

NP: any recommendations for rental companies in HHI?

Also, I'd avoid stopping at South of the Border on the way. There are cleaner places if you are just looking for a meal/bathroom break.

So many great a activity and restaurant suggestions - thank you! And it sounds like even if leaving mid-day we should just plow through the drive. Thanks again for all the tips! Will print and bring with --
