Is there such a thing as emergency day care/nanny care?

My mother will be caring full time for our son when I go back to work. I may occasionally want to give her a day off, and there may be days/weeks when she is unavailable. Does anyone know what options exist for sort of "drop in" day care? Does such a thing exist? What do others do when their nannies are on vacation?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

I know that some daycares offer drop in services provided that they have the space available on the particular day that you need it. You probably have to pay a registration fee and must have an updated health form on file(immunization records) at that center. I've personally seen people pay reduced weekly rates to hold a spot for whenever they needed it. This was at a home daycare. There are also a lot of SAHM's who advertise for last minute care.

Town and Country Nanny
White House Nannies

Both are fairly expensive, though.

Many employers have agreements with area daycares for backup care. Have you asked your employer about backup care? Both my and DH's employers have agreements for backup care, even though neither has priority for primary care anywhere in DC (I'm only slightly bitter about this, but the backup care is nice).

yeah, we use someone who is also employed by white house nannies - $22 per hour for one kid, $27 per hour for two is what she charges us and I understand that is what the agency charges. We like her though and she often comes through when we need her in a pinch (sick kids or daycare closed).

I do child care from my home in Kensington. I used to run a larger scale home daycare but since the birth of my 3rd child have scaled down to just the occasional drop-in care. I am looking to bring in just one full-time or part-time child though. If your interested in the drop-in care please let me know.

My employer offers emergency back-up care through a Bright Horizons downtown. It's a great service. If your employer doesn't offer it, you might suggest it to HR because it is a great benefit that benefits everyone.
