A Georgetown professor of Islamic studies sent shockwaves through the academic and secular world for a lecture he gave essentially condoning Islamic slavery and nonconsensual sex (that’s academic for “rape”).
*** Brown tells his audience Islamic slavery was fundamentally better than slavery that was practiced in the U.S., since it was not racially motivated. How that makes it better is beyond my moral compass, but one can simply look at the well documented history of the Arab slave trade of Africans to dispute this. Although many whites were enslaved by Arab Muslims as well, an estimated 10-20 million black Africans were enslaved between 650 and 1900 by Arab slave traders. Many of these slaves were forcibly castrated to serve as eunuchs that guarded the vast harems of female slaves belonging to the rulers. *** The fact that a college professor can get away with such apologetic views on such serious moral issues surrounding Islamic thought – issues that entire populations who have been taken over by Islamic State are facing with horrific consequences -- is truly staggering. http://www.clarionproject.org/analysis/georgetown-professor-condones-rape-and-slavery-under-sharia |
Without a link to the actual lecture, it's impossible to tell what he was talking about. I seriously doubt he is justifying slavery. It sounds more like he's discussing the Islamic theology of slavery and the actual historical meaning of an ambiguous concept. (Much in the same way a scholar of Judaism or Christianity might discuss the theology of say sacrificing your only son on a mountainside.) He's on record saying that he condemns slavery and rape BTW. |
You're creating your own narrative, aren't you? |
How was he not fired? Let's think. Still thinking. Of yeah... TENURE. That thing professors have that gives them the academic freedom to express points of view that are unpopular, distasteful or just obnoxious-- without being fired.
Look the POV here is hard to justify, and I won't try. And if the students are unhappy, they will make that known. But, in the meantime, all three of the Trumpkins who went to college know that tenure exists for this exact reason. So that not only the PC and popular views get aired, and so discussions that include different points of views happen. And if you had gone to a real college, you would know this OP. |

I thought conservatives were all for free expression on college campuses? |
*waves hands* I've studied Islamic and specifically Ottoman slavery - the mamluks and such. The professor is right. The Islamic cultures created an enslavement system in which anyone, no matter their racial color or cultural backgrounds (didn't extend freedoms to religion though), could rise through the ranks. If I had to compare it to anything - it'd be the Romans gladiator system, where for a time you can earn your freedom through your prowess in the fighting arena. Except for the Ottomans it was just being really politically saavy.
Anyway, that beats the hell out of the U.S. field vs house slave system where you worked til you died, could never entertain the possibility of earning your freedom, and certainly weren't given the opportunity to accumulate wealth and therefore status and therefore property and therefore a family. Do some research OP, you might find it enlightening. Signed. A person who would never want to be a slave but can recognize the differences in systematic structures |
PaleoCon here True conservatives ARE for free expression. I don't agree with this fellow, but I don't have any problem with this guy expressing his opinion. However, Liberals will not tolerate opinions from those on the Far-Right. They want tolerance for Leftist views and Leftist views only. NeoCons are tolerated, but that's because they're Keftists in their hearts. I've been name-called on DCUM for my views. |

I am not sure I agree with that, but it is a coherent and not unreasonable position. Not sure why it is grounds for firing. |
Yes, how awful to live in a society where hate is called out as hate, instead of becoming normalized. |
PaleoCon here Calling something "hate" is not an argument. If Liberals don't realize this quickly, the Left will die in America. If you think I'm wrong, refute me. Name-calling and one-liners won't cut it anymore bud. |
Yeah, bud, now that Trump's in charge, Liberal better shape up fast or die. |
PaleoCon here You're just misconstruing my statement. That only makes you look foolish. |
Hate and name-calling, as well as lies, got Trump into office. Trump and his followers are destroying civil discourse. Just saying. |
DP. I'd say that the loony left has not been fostering civil discourse. |
