Daycare resource guide

Anonymous
My family and I just moved here from California. While I lived in DC a few years ago, I never had to search for daycare in the area. We had an amazing guide book for the entire San Francisco bay area and was hoping to find the same for the Washington DC area. Are there any other resources one could suggest in how you locate Daycare other than the Web and word of mouth? I appreciate any insight into the process.

Thank you.

Many of the counties have a list of authorized daycares located in the specific counties through their websites.

I don't know about a DC wide book but I found these sites useful for Arlington county

You could look for:
Metropolitan Washington Preschool and Daycare Guide by Merry Cavanaugh

It's out of print and at least partly out of date, though, and the descriptions of programs are quite short.

DC also used to have a listing of early childhood development centers on its Web site. I can't find it now, but you could call the Dept of Human Services and ask.

I think the list of DC licensed daycares is under "schools" on the city's website (for whatever reason). Will try to find it and post if I am successful.

Here's the link to the city's list of daycares (and all schools, public & private, it seems). Not terribly informative, however. http://dcschoolsearch.dc.gov/schools/index.asp

Hi. Try www.naeyc.org - it will list all the accredited daycares/preschools. Remember though that some schools aren't accredited because it costs money and therefore, the list is not comprehensive.
