Expectant and Postpartum Moms
So I woke up this morning, well rested after doing nothing at all yesterday, ate breakfast and came to work. In the middle of a presentation I started feeling light headed and eventually had to excuse myself. I was having cold sweats, and everything blacked out on me. I didn't fully pass out but was very close. Is this normal? I am 26 weeks and haven't had anything like this in my first pregnancy or so far in this one. After I could see straight again I was (and still am) feel like it's 100 degrees in here although the thermostat is reading 72 and everyone else is comfortable. I am not even cooling down with my fan. I drink well more than the suggested 64 oz a day of water and eat well. I don't get it?!? Should I call my doc, or just wait and see what happens? I have an extreme headache as well. Suggestions?
If I were you, I would immediately call my doctor.
During the first trimester of my first pregnancy I passed out a couple of times - once on a very crowded train while I was standing. But I felt fine shortly after. Yours sounds a little different. You could very well just be having an off day (and bad headaches make everything worse) but if you're worried it can't hurt to call your doc's office and speak with the nurse about it.
Is it possible your blood sugar was low? I've passed out a few times because of that (usually in the morning too, before I ate), but not during pregnancy.
I am 26 weeks and had almost this exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Felt like I was going to pass out, sweating, etc. And I would have passed out if I didn't sit down. I normally have low blood pressure and blood pressure drops even further in the second trimester. So I chalked it up to that. I was shaky for a few hours, but then felt fine and it hasn't happened since
The feeling like you're going to pass out is a common pregnancy symptom. Happened to me several times in the first and second trimester and I called my doctor and he was not concerned. Like you, I was afraid it was something serious but it was not. I often found myself needing to sit down while shopping or in museums or standing for long periods. Call your doc if you are concerned but it is almost certainly nothing.
I had this a few times during second tri. Could be low blood pressure. Could be anemia. Could be blood sugar issues. I would call your doc, just in case.
Please call your doc and insist on being seen. I know it's everyone's favorite Dr. Google-style diagnosis, but the headache combined with the vision changes might point to pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome. Go get checked for your own peace of mind.

Do you have a fever? You say you feel hot...
I woudl take your temperature if you feel hot, and even if you have no fever, would call your doctor. These symptoms may be nothing much, but definitely best to let your doctor know about them. |

It could've been a sudden lapse in blood pressure.
Do you have a heart murmur by chance? I fainted during both of pregnancies (although much earlier - around 9 weeks), but since each were isolated incidents I didn't think much of it. |
The exact same thing happened to me at 24 weeks. I thought it was blood pressure (mine tends to be low), but it turns out that it was low blood sugar. I had eaten something sugary 2 hours earlier, and hadn't eaten anything else that morning. Now I carry peanut butter crackers with me everywhere and make sure I eat regularly (and eat protein - not sugar) to prevent the blood sugar crashes. My OB said my blood sugar is just extra sensitive, but it's nothing serious. It's good to check in with your doctor just in case.
I started getting dizzy and light headed at random times in the middle of my third trimester. I stopped working altogether and that seemed to help. Looking back at it now, I think it was just stress and anxiety, which is understandable when you are pregnant!
I experienced that with my first pregnancy, right around the 26 week mark, and had several instances of almost passing out in the shower. Turned out that I was anemic. Iron pills made a significant difference.
