Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
|
My son doesn't havy diagnosed special needs at the moment.
He's entering 2nd grade and I've found that writing is very frustrating for him. All by himself, he's found that if he sits on a small kickball, he can bounce up and down while writing and that seems to help. I've looked around and found a store that sells some products that seems to be used for this purpose: http://specialchildren.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=specialchildren&cdn=parenting&tm=9&gps=392_289_1020_581&f=00&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.1.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.specialkidszone.com They come in circul shape, wedge shape and others. I was wondering if anyone here had any opinions about the pros and cons of different types of seat cushions like this? I'd like to get him something for use at least at hom, if it would make it easier for him to write. Also, if he does like it and it helps, do you think the school would be willing to let him use one at school, or would I need to get him formally evaluated in order to make this accomodation? |

This is what I'm thinking of getting, but it is pricy:

| My DD has a circle one and uses it for circle time, and loves it. The teachers say that it works for her to help her sit up (core muscles), and to establish her space. Really no down sides that I can think of. |
| my dd uses one of those too. it really helps her. i didn't think it was that expensive -- like $25? |

thanks!
The one I'm looking at is something like $34 or so -- not too expensive, but if it is just a gimmick that breaks or slips or somehting, then I'd hate to shell out the money. But I saw with my own eyes how much better my son was able to write when he was bouncing a bit on this rubber ball, so I'm willing to try it -- homework was a nightmare last year if it meant swriting anything more than a few words. |

you can get it for cheaper. http://www.specialkidszone.com/Product_Level3.asp?ProductID=3169
my dd uses the smaller one and the teachers have commented on how it really keeps her in place at circle time and during art projects (she just puts it on her chair). |
