Can you identify this book from childhood?

I loved this book as a kid. I think it might have been a novel geared towards elementary schoolers, maybe 4th-6th grade (I know I read it in elementary school). I'm pretty sure one of the character's names was Daphne. The only thing I really remember is there was a marsh-like area, and someone had to walk through the marshy reedy area on stepping stones to get to a house hidden there.

Does this sound familiar at all? I would have read it in the mid 1980s, but I'm not sure when it was written.

I don't know it off the top of my head but sounds like the kind of book i would've totally dug. You might try posting your question here: http://www.loganberrybooks.com/stumpthebookseller/ and see if anyone there can ferret it out?

Could it be Gone-Away Lake? Main character's name is Portia. She stays with her cousin for the summer and they find an abandoned resort community by a dried-up lake.

Elizabeth Enright is one of my absolute favorite authors. I read all her books aloud to my kids, some of them two or three times, LOL.

PP here. Well, if it's not, you and OP should read it anyway. My kids (they were mid-elementary school at the time) LOVED it. And there is a sequel.

I also HIGHLY recommend Enright's Melendy series. This is actually the second book, but the first one (The Saturdays) is not nearly as good as the other three, and you don't need it to get the other ones.

Thimble Summer is great, too--it won the Newbury medal--but I don't think it's as good as the 3rd and 4th books of the Melendy series, which are 2 of my all-time favorite books, children or adult.
