| I emailed a teacher at 8:30am on Thursday. Do you think I will hear back before the weekend? Does MCPS have any rules on time for teachers to respond? |
| Teachers are expected to respond to emails within 24-48 hours. If the issue is complicated, they are still expected to respond just to say, "Thank you for your email and I will get back to you ______ once I have a chance to look into this further" or something similar. |
| On a simple issue and teacher is available we hear same day, otherwise if she's on leave or has a lot going on or its not important within a few days. |
| Some teachers are better than others with email. DD had one teacher a few years ago who always took at least four days to return my email. I started calling the front office and asking the secretary to put a paper message her mailbox. I think that got her attention. |
| 48 hours is reasonable for all business emails. |
|
OP I hate to ask, but does your email actually contain a question with a ?
If not, then you can reasonably expect her / him not to respond at all. |
| My experience in middle school has been that even teachers who I really like and otherwise respect and give every indication of liking me still often do not respond to emails, sometimes for more than a week. I find it infuriating and somewhat inexplicable. The principal would advise to forward the email to him or cc him on a second email, but I wouldn't want to do that to a teacher I otherwise like. So I would follow up every 48 hours if I really needed a response. |
| I ask my staff to respond to parents within 24 to 48 hours and in the same manner in which they were initially contacted. I figure if a parent calls then they would appreciate a call in return. Same with email, etc. |
| At our ES, the principal has told the teacher that if they need time to respond to a question that they need to think about, they can take 2 days to respond. I've found that in reality it can be up to 4 days which can be frustrating. |
| If I were a teacher I'll be damned if I'd respond on my own time or on weekends. If I couldn't find time during my planning periods or after school then the hell with it. |
I wouldn't be responding outside of school hours. You might hear tomorrow OP. I would not expect to hear back on a weekend. |
| OP, it's unreasonable for you to expect a response on the weekend - that is their time. So you'll likely hear back tomorrow (Monday). |
| I often re-email after a week... I know they should reply quickly but that seems to seldom happen. |
| If its Frost Middle in Rockville - good luck. I have been waiting months. Not sure how to proceed? |

I've emailed my sons teacher 4x total this year. Twice
I never heard back, once it took 3 days and once 2. |
