Infertility Support and Discussion

I have more and more bad things about swine flu to the point that I am thinking that maybe putting off ttc until after flu season may be a good idea. I realize they are talking about a vaccine available in October but I have never had a flu vac in my life so I thinking it may not be a good thing to try one while I am pregnant regardless of the "it's fine" jargon. This is really stressing me out because I don't have a huge amount of time left but I am wondering if worrying about this flu that apprently can kill pregnant women is worse than waiting another six months?? Has anyone else considered this?

| No - there will always be something. Try now and then take appropriate precautions when you are pregnant (wash hands, avoid sick people). |
| I'm going through IVF and if it works, I'm going to put my faith in the vaccine and be the first in line when the new vaccine is available. Honestly, I'm more worried about dying in a car accident during one of my drives way out to the Shady Grove office in Rockville. But if you are really worried and you're young and/or fertile, there's no harm in waiting. Although if it takes you 6 months to get pregnant, you'll be back in the flu season again. |
| Good point-I can't tell if the media is just making more of this or if I should really be worried. I do have a child about to go to preschool so I am thinking this year may be worse for us for the flu but I feel like time is running out to have another baby. Like I need something else to stress me out! |

On the one hand, the CDC reports that pregnant women are more vulnerable to H1N1 complications than other healthy adults, so I think you're smart to be thinking about this. At the same time, I suspect the odds are still higher that you'll be killed in a car accident vs. die of H1N1.
I plan to try to get a flu vaccination in early fall before TTC. I've also never had one and consider myself generally vaccine wary. But I'm also a pragmatist. I'd rather get the shot that science says is safe than risk the health of myself and my child based on my own unscientific theory that shots are generally a bad idea. |
