Anyone here with a low risk NT result (like above 1 in 5000)

Anonymous
went on to have a child with Down Syndrome or some other chromossomal (sp?) problem?

My test results came in and it's 1 in 10.000 so my doc. strongly adviced against ammnio.... I had my mind set on doing it since before I even got pregnant, but now I am not sure. He said the worst result he had in his practice was a 1 in 500 risk that went on to have a baby with DS...

I had a triploid pregnancy, my husband is old (they say it doesn't matter, but really who knows?)

What should I do?

I did not have an NT score that low-risk, although it was fairly low for my age. I went ahead and had the amnio, because unfortunately, someone is always the "1" in that equation. We're glad we did, although the amnio obviously can't test for every possible problem.

Your doctor cannot predict if you will be that one person - and he also will not be the one raising the child if you are.

How old are you, and did you have difficulty getting pregnant?

Are you willing/able to raise a child with Down Syndrome - and is your marriage able to withstand the stress of a high-need child?

I think I would have been comfortable with the 1 in 10,000 odds. I was not comfortable with my own 1 in 2900 odds, so I did the amnio. All was well and I am relieved to have definitive information. I have heard of two people (one anonymous online person and one friend of a friend) who ended up being the 1 in 4000 to have a baby with DS.

I am 30 and we have been trying for 4 years (due to his problems). We got pregnant in our 3rd IUI (2nd resulted in a m/s because of tryploidism (?) ).

If I have the choice (meaning, know in advance) I will terminate a pregnancy with a baby with DS or any other major thing... if I don't know and end up with a DS baby..well, there isn't much I can do right? Just try to do my best I guess.

My results were something like one in 11,800. That was fine for me and I did not have any additional tests done. I was 39 while pregnant. My son is almost 3 now and has no major health issues; we are very fortunate.

I have low NT score and, although I would love to be reassured and think I would terminate if I had a bad amnio, with such a low risk I could not justify to myself taking the risk of an amnio. I know it is low. I had it last time due to a bad NT screen and all was fine. But there is always the 1 too for the amnio. Moreover there are tons of other things that can happen to the kid, especially during birth. Actually among all the people I know who have children with special needs, it is all due to other reasons (complications during the birth for 3 of them, autism for another)

I'm 34 and will have just turned 35 at delivery.
First trimester screen risk of trisomy 21 (down's) came back as <1:10,000. Trisomy 13 and 18 risk <1:5,800.
I am completely comfortable with these odds and haven't given an amnio a second thought since I got them.
But I'd be fine with with any odds less than my age-related risk (which was about 1:280).

1 in 10,000 are great odds. I think you need to ask yourself if you're comfortable, given those odds, with the risks that come with amnio, especially since you had trouble getting pregnant. If it were me, I would not be. (I realize this isn't addressing your main question, though.)
