Good Morning,

I'm writing to share that I recently opened my private therapy practice in Rockville, MD, specializing in helping adolescents with eating disorders, body image issues, anxiety, and survivors of trauma. I tailor treatment to each person, but I particularly enjoy using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). For more information about my practice, you can visit my website at www.jenniferrollin.com

I find that there's still such a stigma/embarrassment around eating disorders. I'm no professional, but I think the throwing up aspect of bulimia is why it's so shameful to most that suffer with it, like it's gross or something.

It's such a shame that having an addiction is spoken about more openly than an eating disorder.

Thank you for your comment. I agree in that there is an unfair stigma often surrounding eating disorders. I explain to my clients that eating disorder behaviors (i.e. purging, bingeing, restricting) are ways that they are trying to get their needs met (i.e. to feel a sense of "control," manage anxiety, cope with past trauma etc). This helps to take away some of the feelings of shame, as there is a function behind these behaviors. I then help people to look at more life-affirming ways to get their needs met. I'm passionate about raising awareness and helping people to feel less ashamed, as we would never judge someone for having a physical health condition. So, we should not judge those who struggle with mental health challenges.
