I'm heading to NYC overnight to see a friend--it will be the first time I have ever spent a night away from our 2 1/2-year-old. I don't need anything fancy, but I would like safe, relatively, nice, and not too expensive. I'm taking the train so something in midtown near Penn station would be great. Thanks!

NYC is cheap right now - 4 diamond hotels for 150.00! Get onto expedia and you can "map" it that way to find the location you like. Then you should call the hotel directly and ask them if they will match what you found on expedia...there are so many hotels in NYC and i dont know your taste / etc....too hard to recommend!
have fun! |
| There are a couple Marriotts near Times Square that are nice and within walking distance of Penn Station. |
| Salsbury on W. 57th, the Holiday Inn on W 57th between 9th and 10th. Both are quite cheep. |

Try the Pod Hotel.
I am at the Waldorf right now and the rate right now is $249/night which is half the normal rate. So good deals to be had. |
| Club Quarters near 75 Rock and the Sheraton Towers have pretty good rates. I've stayed at both for business and felt very safe. |
| PP here. I would also recommend Hotel Warwick. Older hotel but great staff and I've snagged pretty low rates there many times. |
| Try The Benjamin --- on 50th betw. Lex and 3rd. Very affordable and nice, older hotel with a lovely lobby, comfy linens, high ceilings, sophisticated decor, and friendly staff. Not super-close to Penn Station, but very close to MOMA and Bloomingdale's! Have a great time in the city! |
| There is the Bryant Park Hotel on 42nd and Sixth Avenue, which is relatively close to Penn Station. There's also the Westin Hotel in Times Square, which is on 42nd and Broadway or Eighth. They are both clean, safe and reasonable right now. I second the recommendation to go to Expedia.com. |
| Absolutely do a hunt online - you can get a very good deal if you'll pay ahead (no cancellation right) even at nice name hotels like Hyatt or Westin. We went with a hotel that looked nice on the website (about $15 cheaper than a Hyatt nearby a night) but was pretty shabby once we got there. So I'd recommend going w/ a national chain if you're seeking a good price since that way you'll know what you get. |

My office HQ is near Penn Station, and we stay at these places, which we can usually get really good rates on:
Affinia Manhattan right across the street from Penn station on 7th. Very convenient, only some rooms are not yet renovated. Most rooms have kitchens because it used to be an apartment building. Right on the Avenue so it's safe. Holiday Inn Express on 29th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Safe area, but might feel scary if walking on your own at night because it's on a side street. Raddison Martinique at Broadway and 32nd. In the middle of Koreatown if I recall. Very nice hotel. |
| OP here--thank you all very much! |
| Try Hotel Chandler....it is walking distance from teh train station and is very clean and quiet. |
| Bid on your own price on priceline - we have gotten incredible deals that way! |
I can second the Warwick. It's older, but the location is ideal, safe, and far enough from Times Square (which I find to still be very seedy). Go to Google maps and check out the street view so you can get a feel for the neighborhood. |
