Keeping pre-teens safe on Facebook

Anonymous
Hi everyone -

Pre-teens obviously want to be active on social media, but it's full of security landmines. You never know who's trying to contact them, or their intentions.

The Supreme Court will soon decide whether convicted child molesters can legally be banned from sites like Facebook. (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-socialmedia-idUSKCN12S2JK)

I'm a DC reporter doing a story on how parents keep their kids safe online, considering the risks.

If you'd be willing to go on-camera to share your strategies, it would help humanize the issue and inform other parents.

My email is cseales@mediageneral.com

Thank you,

Preteens have no interest in Facebook.

Preteens are too young to use facebook.

Aren't they all interested in other social media platforms than facebook? FB is for moms and grandmas.

Parents need to supervise their kids better.

All kids need to be 13 to use any social media. Those that are using it anyway with either parents that are clueless or that just don't care, are screwed anyway.

Facebook is for old people. Even adults in their late 20's barely use it. When they do, it's to toss their old relatives a bone.

Parents who let preteens on social media are complete idiots. Period.

We do not allow our preteens to be on social media. Very easy to monitor. They do not have their own phone, only access the computer in our main family room with regular supervision.
