Mirrored furniture - yea or nay?

Anonymous
I saw an article (maybe the Post?) recently that showed a little girl's room done in bright pink with green accents. The chest between the two twin beds was a mirrored chest. I loved it, but I haven't been able to find one. In searching online, it looks like mirrored furniture is a recent trend. I'm not having much luck finding one for less than $600, though, so it may be a moot point.

So, yea or nay?

I like them, but probably wouldn't get one. I can't imagine all the litte finger prints and kiss marks that are bound to collect on it.

Well, that's part of the Hollywood Regency trend from a few years ago... maybe 2002-ish?

The yea or nay depends on what you want from it. Are you creating a whole room that's similarly glam? Do you have an Art Deco home in general? Are you trying an eclectic look that needs kind of a stand-out piece? I think girls' rooms can get away with an extra helping of drama.

On the other hand, I haven't seen a lot of this in the last couple of years. It's a sharp look, but I don't think it's such a recent trend.

is it childproof? if someone falls against it will it break in little pieces?

Nay! Looks like it will be dated in about 2 minutes, but not before it gets all smudgy.

Z Gallerie had a mirrored furniture line, not sure if they still do.

I've seen lots of design shows where they always say not to put mirrored furniture in any area with lots of traffic, or any place it will get handled a lot. Apparently they damage easily. You know that black smudgy look mirrors sometimes get in spots after awhile? That's what will happen. Might not be the best choice for a kids room.

OP here. After thinking about the reality of fingerprints in a high touch area like my DD's room, and the possibility of shattering if something fell on it... I think this is a kids' room idea I'm going to pass on. Since it was so $$ anyway, that's not too hard to deal with for me!

wait a minute... do interior designers have kids? what a stupid idea to put a mirror like dresser in a kids room!

Depends on the age of the child.

Um, no thanks.

I really do not like it but maybe it looked good with the other furniture.
