I put mine up in a french twist. It's so easy once you get the hang of it. You'll need a long hair chopstick for this.
In a nutshell, wet your hands and then wet your hair slightly on the outer part with your hands. Gives your hair a little texture to work with. Aim for grabbing a high ponytail in the back of your head, only run your hair under your finger to form a U and your finger is in the middle of the U. With your other hand, hold the hair lump steady and take your finger out. With your free hand, drive the chopstick into the lump of hair down low on the lump aiming up. Go about 1/4 the way of the length of the chopstick and then spin it and go back through the lump going down. Voila! The beauty of this is its simplicity and versatility. I leave my long ends flipped out of the chignon, but if you wanted to tuck them in for a professional look you would do that after you've removed your finger and your hand is holding the lump of hair, then just tuck the ends into/ under the lump, then use the chopstick. Best of all? When you're out in the summer and it's hotter than you expected and you'd LOVE to get your hair off your neck. What's that? No rubber band? Got a pen? Use it as your chopstick and you've saved the day!! And you look effortlessly chic! I don't brush my hair to make it smooth, it will work itself out. |
| PS - for beginners, you may want to try this a few times while your hair is still damp from the shower. It keeps its shape and isn't as silky slippery between your fingers. |
I'll try it, thanks! And where do you buy the chopstick? |

Ah, chopsticks are hard to find! When you DO find one you like, buy 3-4 of them.
I've found them at Barney's (got lucky, they were on sale and they had a lot of them), sometimes you can find them on the hair row at Target by Goody (almost never though..), and lastly if you ever see an Asian hair shop in a mall, they almost always have them. They tend to be very decorative, though. I prefer tortoiseshell or light brown and plain so they don't really show up in my hair, or grab the eye. |

you can try the "chopstick" thing with a pencil too. i used to do that when i was in high school.
i also sometimes use a clip, claw-style, and do the french twist thing but just clip it down. |
