(1) how many hours per week commitment is it; and
(2) do you have to be bilingual at the start to be a room parent? My Spanish lessons are just starting. Thanks in advance! |
Hours: It depends on the grade.
When I was there, there were at least two room parents, one English dominant, the other Spanish, often one or both were bilingual. It depends on the parent/guardian pool. |
Hours would depend most of all on the number of other room parents who volunteer. If a parent fluent in Spanish doesn't volunteer, the teachers and English-speaking room parents will recruit one vigorously. We've sometimes had junior room parents we could turn to just for contacting families more comfortable speaking Spanish.
I did it one year and found that my limited email access during the workday really compromised my timely effectiveness. The overall time commitment wasn't so bad, but there were two other room parents to share the load. |
