Just realized my daughter's parochial still discloses ranks. How to get them to stop?

So ridiculous. Average-sized school. Would have brought it up last year but she received a transcript for summer program with no rank, so I assumed they smartened up and did away with it. Nope! Just looked at Parchment and it's there again. Students with all As are outside of the top 20%! I've never pressed the school for anything but this seems like something that should end a-sap, but I worry they're just going to think I'm being a grubby mom. Does such a modification to school code require school board, diocese, etc.?

I just don't think they realize how many kids they're screwing when they have to compete against students from privates that don't rank & publics where a As and Bs easily puts you in the top 20%. School already has hard GPA cutoffs for magna and summa, so it seems like rank is already completely unnecessary.

Not to worry OP. Colleges all know the caliber of a particular school. An A at a first tier private or top public beats an A from a lower tiered school. They know what sort of school your kid attends will judge her vs. others from that school. So whether it shows ranks or not...she will be judged vs. others

So your kid is a lazy mediocrity.

If all As isn't in the top 20%, then there is major grade inflation at that school. I think that's what OP is most afraid of...that her kid's "As" aren't as true as she needs them to be.

No. My daughter's SAT is one of the best in the school. There's only 100 kids in the graduating class.

There's grade inflation everywhere. But in a small school you have 20 kids in a top 20%, Wilson's top 20% is over 100 students.

If her grades are strong and her SATs are stellar, then what is the problem?

By the time the diploma comes out, the deal is sealed with colleges anyway.

When a school discloses rank it's on the transcript sent to colleges. Most privates ceased doing this because you're at a disadvantage when you have to disclose "outside top 10% or 20%" vs "no rank".

So, OP, how does the school make sure the rankings are fair?
Do they rank based on points out of 100? Your daughter got all As, but her overall points were lower than the higher As in the top 20%?

If this is the case, I think you need to ignore the alphabetical system and just go with the points system. Your daughter needs to work a little harder to crack that top 20%. I'm sure she can do it.

Which school is this? Looking at parochial now. Please tell me this isn't OLV.

Even when they say they don't report rank, there is always ways to rely the information

Just tell them you are special and they should change the rules for you.

OP mentions SAT scores and 100 in the graduating class so it sounds like high school. Ranking is fairly common at that level so I don't see the fuss.

How do they know this when there are 10,000 high schools in this country?

I can see the admissions department at UVA having a good feel for McLean or Springfield High School, but what about smaller colleges and smaller high schools.... and especially those kids applying to schools quite a distance from home. Say like a Catoctin High School student applying to Scripps???
