My son will be old enough for sleepaway camp next summer and while camp is still on everyone's minds, has anyone sent their son to Falling Creek Camp in NC? It is one of a few camps I am looking at for next summer. Thanks! |
I've been for Dad's weekend with both of my boys. Great camp. We're also sending them for the first time, mostly because of friends that are going that keep going back and keep adding weeks (one week first year, 2 weeks second year, 3 weeks third year). I think it's great. Website is true to form. I set up a google alert for "falling creek camp" and have not seen any bad press at all for the last 6 months or so. Not cheap, but worth it. |
My college age son went for 2 years. The first time for a 2 week session in 4th grade, the second time for 4 weeks. He loved it. |
OP here. Thanks for the recs. To the dad who posted- What age do most boys go for the first time? I see from their website that the youngest boys go for one week to begin with. |
I have sent my two boys to Falling Creek - as an urban mom - I can tell you it's really a great place to get city kids "unplugged" and outside in the most amazingly beautiful location. Falling Creek was also featured on the cover of Time Magazine a couple of years ago and was called "Boy Heaven". It's pretty close. I host a Falling Creek Camp Movie Night in the fall at my house where prospective campers and families come to see the camp movie and meet the director, Yates Pharr. Contact the camp and ask for the contact info on the DC Camp Movie Night and you can bring your son. It would be a great way for both of you to get some comfort about the camp and especially about the first sleepaway experience. |
My son has attended Falling Creek for three years and he hopes to go 4 weeks next summer. We started sending him when he was 11 years old and not knowing a soul. He loved it. Our 5 year old is ready to go now but I think that we are going to wait until he is around 8. It will be hard because he watched the Falling Creek video last night and started packing his things. He was ready to go. Now is the time to send in your application. You will not regret this wonderful haven for boys. |
I am the OP. I think I may send my son next spring for the Father/Son weekend. I saw on the website that they have a waitlist. Has anyone been put on the waitlist as a new camper if they sent if their application prior to Sept 15? |
