With obesity being one of the 'biggest' health concerns in the US...is it odd that the new SG is obese? |
Everyone has their issues. Doctors come in all shapes and sizes. |
I'm not saying they don't...but its an issue I was hoping they would tackle, and it looks like it'll be harder to get the point across this way, no? |
Overweight, sure. Obese - I don't think so. |
I think it's worrisome; even more so are her credentials, which are pretty average for this town. I wondered how many people would choose her as their primary caregiver given her college and med school?
|
Definitely obese - see photo taken today: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/13/politics/main5155012.shtml |
That photo is on the left; obese on the right. I agree with the first pp, Benjamin is overweight, not obese. ![]() ![]() |
Left/right in last entry may be above/below, depending on browser. |
I know her. Yes, I think she probably fits the definition of obese. But she is very qualified. It's not about the educational background, but the accomplishments and the ability to set, communicate, and carry forward a public health agenda. She will do that very well. |
Kind of reminds me of a roommate who went to the student health clinic and was told to lose some weight. She was probably 10-20 lbs overweight and was really PO'd that, as she put it, Jabba the Hutt (the doctor was very obese) said it in a condescending manner. |
Oh my. |
I see nothing wrong with where she went to college and med school and would have no problem choosing a person with her academic background as my PCP. I find her credentials to be honorable and am pleased with the path her career has taken. She sounds like a great nominee to me. |
If we based nominee selections on the preferences of people living in this town, that would be really scary. This position is all about communicating the message of prevention to the nation - and I think her background as sort of a rural/family doctor/advocate makes sense - you can have great credentials, but you need to be able to move people to act. How many docs with excellent credentials are good communicators? One way to view her weight is that she is like many Americans and struggles with weight and some of her family medical history demonstrates the consequences - diabetes, high blood pressure. If she herself goes on a public campaign to address her own weight, maybe this could have some sort of impact? But obesity is just one prevention issue she has to tackle, there are many, many others. |
actually the other woman is probably morbidly obese and benjamin is probably just 'regular' obese. we are very forgiving in america of people that are simply overweight that most of them look normal to us. i am (prepregnancy) at the top of my weight range yet people at work call me "tiny". i'm not, but compared to many around me I seem smaller. |
You don't have to go to Harvard to be intelligent and work hard. |
