Manor Montessori for DC families?

Anonymous
After getting overwhelmed by the competitive nature of the more reputable preschools in DC (we live in the district) we decided to send our 3 year old son to Manor Montessori next Fall. It's located in Potomac, and except for the long drive, it's an absolutely ideal situation. The buildings were built specifically for the Montessori philosophy, and they have large, beautifully designed rooms with tons of natural light, along with an impressive outdoor playscape. Because they can accommodate a large number of students, we were offered a spot upon completion of our interview this week. But according to the director we're the only family from DC who has applied! So I'm curious, why have other parents in the district not considered it? Am I missing something quite obvious to everyone else?

We live in DC and intend to apply to the Potomac campuses of Manor and Lone Oak next fall. It is a bit of a drive but at least it is in the opposite direction as traffic.

Manor does have a campus closer to DC at St Dunstan's Church (former home of Holden Montessori), off Massachusetts opposite Westbard.

(I'm sure you knew that already, OP and 10:35, but just in case anyone else in DC might be interested in the school...)

OP here - the interview was pretty easy, we met with the director while our son played with some toys. We asked a bunch of questions and although she wanted to know about his verbal skills, it wasn't a formal evaluation like I thought it would be. Most of all, the building & classrooms were very impressive and superior to anything I've seen in DC - so I think it's definitely worth the longer drive. The only hesitation I have is that he'd need to attend every day, as opposed to a 2 or 3 day schedule. What do other moms think? Is that a bit much for a 3 year old? He'll be in fulltime school or work for the rest of his life....seems kind of odd to start that type of schedule so early. But it's the Montessori philosophy of providing consistency with daily routines (according to the director). I think Georgetown offers a more flexible schedule but we're waitlisted there.

For a montessori, everyday is best. We've put our son at the Franklin Montessori in Rockville, (in the daily program) since he was 2--he greatly benefits from going everyday.

How are the Bethesda/Mass Ave facilities?

Hi, another poster here. My child will be attending Manor on Mass Ave. I have never seen the Potomac campus but it sounds quite nice, in fact nicer than the. St. Dunstan's location. That said, my view is that the Mass Ave location is small but clean and though somewhat below ground (it is built into the side of a hill) there is very good light from full size windows. The outdoor play area is nice -- large and surrounded by trees. My child has also attended camp at that location and I was very comfortable with the facility.

Our DC attends Manor's St. Dunstan's campus. Agree with the PP on the facilities, however, it is clean and bright (esp. for being somewhat below ground), they have great resources and the teachers are fabulous.

Our child goes to the Mass Ave Manor campus - we, too, were impressed by the Potomac location but the drive just didn't make any sense for us. We are very, very happy with the Bethesda campus, teachers and curriculum - and 5 days a week is standard for any Montessori program. Most 'true' Montessori schools will only offer a 5 day program. We were nervous but our child took it in stride and LOVES school.

*bump*

I would love to hear more feedback from current parents of the Manor Montessori at the Potomac campus.
