24 to 36 hours, generally. But you need to be doing the OPKs 2-3 times a day to get a good idea of when LH spikes.

But if you get a smiley 3 times how do you know when it spikes

First time is the beginning of the surge. It stays high for a bit (different for different people) - which is why you keep getting the smiley. Stop testing after the first one. If you're temping, you should be able to confirm ovulation with a temp spike.
