MoCo Language Immersion and Redshirting?

Anonymous
Hey MoCo parents- we got a very bad lottery number for the language immersion programs. Wondering if we will be allowed to apply again for a K slot next year if we follow our preschool teacher's advice and "give DS an extra year" (ie, hold him back). Anybody have any idea? The answer is not on the MCPS website.

Certainly confirm this with the MoCo office, but I believe it is just like any other application for K--in other words, if your child hasn't completed K at another school, but rather PreK, then they come into MoCo for K just like anyone else, even if they have been redshirted. Applying for the immersion programs isn't any different than enrolling your child in your neighborhood school for K.

But what if child completed K in another (private) school? And wants to re-enroll in K for MCPS?

I can't imagine why it would be a problem, but you could call the DCCAPS Office that handles the applications. (DCCAPS stands for Division of Consortia Choice Application Programs or something like that.) Their number is on the MCPS website.

You could apply for first grade. Fewer families apply that year than for K, so your odds would be better. Not every immersion school has openings in first grade in every year, so it would depend on the year and the class. But our DC got in for first grade.
