I found this article in the Vancouver Sun sickening. Some have been calling Malia Obama :"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."
Conservative Free Republic blog in free speech flap after racial slurs directed at Obama children. http://tinyurl.com/l2fkmy |
This gives me a pain in the gut. I think it is best to ignore this mentality. The Obamas and other educated Americans choose not to dignify this behavior. |
I think that article only reinforces what a jack ass party the people who wrote it belong to. |
Ditto-let's start here. |
I'm a Republican and would never consider writing such things. The forum from which these quotes are extracted is an anonymous blog forum where ANYONE can post. What gives credence to the idea that a run of the mill conservative posted such thing? Of course the Free Republic, an independent entity, now needs to grapple with the same anonymity/free speech/hate speech issues that all blog managers need consider. Like this one--how about considering wide-spread slurs against conservatives: "jack-ass party" as hate speech? |
There is plenty of hateful racist stuff out there. Leave it there, please. |
Ditto - conservative and this is unacceptable, period. I also felt the same way when Letterman talked about Sarah Palin's 14 yo being Knocked Up by an adult baseball player. Equally unacceptable. |
He was referring to the older daughter, and when he made the joke, it seemed to be more about A-Rod then about Palin's daughter.
Jeez. |
Why would you be an apologist? Unfunny and off-limits in either case. Satire has been a tradition since ancient times--all for it. But also for civility and boundaries that can pass the litmus test of if you think might be over the line (vis someone's children) you probably are. Go for some other 'joke' or comment. |
Debatable, since the 14 yo was the one a the baseball game and on the trip. |
and gross if he was talking about a young girl who just finished hs. I really hate when people say hmmm someone is 18 so it's okay. Not okay at any age but 18 is still young..heck you can't even drink yet. That girl had enough on her plate with the loser boyfriend and handling the pressure of not doing the easy thing and killing her baby. |
Shoot - I was so agreeing with you about 18 being too young and how much Bristol Palin had on her plate but then wham - you lost me with your abortion comment. Feel about abortion however you want, but it is never easy for anyone. |
I did not post that but I will comment--
Abortion is never easy; but when you choose not to have one in a crisis pregnancy the whole world is in on your difficult decision-making. It is visible. When Bristol made the choice to keep her baby she also made the choice to face public scrutiny; becoming the butt of late-night jokes is piliing on. I know because I chose to "keep" my baby. Abortion would have been harder, adoption, hardest (for me--to bond neo-natally, and then give up your child--birth mothers I hold in awe for their enduring sacrifice). But while I could have suffered privately if I had taken an abortion, "keeping" my baby became public knowledge, fodder for comment etc for many years to come. My twenties identity with all that society ascribes to the young, single mom. Happily married now, and loving my child...I would say, just as you would offer sympathy and hope to a friend who confides in you about an abortion, extend same to the single parent or adoptive birth mother. All have stared down life-altering choices, some more 'visibly' than others. No one deserves societal judgment for this most private of decisions--especially not derision for becoming pregnant when the only way you (we) know is that she chose to "keep" the baby. |
Sorry if the "killing her baby" offends but it is what it is. I think more people should state the reality because it seems like we are becoming sort of immune to what abortion is. |
